Screen Gems has released the first trailer for the adaptation of Cassandra Clare's young adult novel The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. The story follows Clary Fray (Lily Collins), a teenage girl who discovers that she's descended from a sect of half-angel warriors who protect the world from demons. As a teen drama with ties to the occult, The Mortal Instruments will draw comparisons to Twilight. But the trailer---specifically the sword fights and flamethrowers within---suggest more ass-kicking. There is a big world and dense mythology here to explore, and the visuals help sell it better than the synopsis ever could. It helps when you have Mad Men's eloquent Jared Harris to deliver the exposition in what sure looks like the "Giles" role. Expanding into more theaters this weekend is Steven Spielberg's Best Picture nomination shoo-in, Lincoln. The period piece is less a cut-and-dry biopic of America's 16th President, played brilliantly by Daniel Day-Lewis, and more of an examination of the burdens placed on Lincoln to keep a nation from falling apart while abolishing slavery and attempting to hold his personal life together. Lincoln also stars Tommy Lee Jones, James Spader, David Strathairn, Sally Field, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Lee Pace and Hal Holbrook. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2 opens Friday here in the States, but the fifth entry in the series is already off to a rollicking start in four overseas markets. Here are the Day 1 highlights (all totals converted to U.S. dollars): France - 219,000 admissions, $1.8 million. The marathon of Part 1 and Part 2 of Breaking Dawn sold 25,000 of those tickets. Netherlands - 21,000 admissions, $392,000. That's on just 50 screens. Sweden - 20,000 admissions, $362,000. This only counts the marathon and midnight showings. Belgium - 27,000 admissions, $531,000. This more than doubles the comparable 13,000 tickets sold for the first night of Breaking Dawn - Part 1. According to Deadline, the final sequel achieved series best totals in Netherlands, Sweden, and Belgium.
